L’Esprit Literary Review is hosting a reading on zoom to celebrate the publication of its first public issue. To understand the review’s modern aesthetic, here is a quote by associate editor Jessica Denzer:
“But I think all those writers, even though they’re doing different things, have perfected something that I’m always trying to do: they work from the flow of the sentence, the poetry of it. Even in the most gut wrenching of moments, it’s their language that roots it onto the page and so into the reader’s mind. It’s the language that comes first to reveal the idea, the experience, and the feeling.”
Several contributors to the first issue will read. I will be reading a prose piece that I wrote entitled “The Musings of Mrs. Magritte,” which draws upon the paintings of Rene Magritte and the imagined thoughts of his wife Georgette Berger. The piece has two voices: a reaction to a theme of the paintings (which I will read) and the thoughts of Mrs. Magritte about her marriage (which my friend Michele Beaulieux will read). A slide show of some of the paintings will simultaneously be shown.
The reading takes place on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. Central Time.
We’ve decided to do a Google form for people to sign up, so as to avoid posting a Zoom link directly online. The link to the form is here:

Be sure to sign up. The reading will probably be recorded, so even if you miss the exact time you may be able to hear a recording.
